Get Involved, Become a Volunteer!


The San Bernardino County Library is looking for energetic, positive and hardworking individuals who would like to give back to their communities.

Library Volunteers help the library in the following ways:
  • Shelving Books and Shelf Reading
  • Prepare crafts for programs
  • Assist with Children’s Programs (Live scan required)
  • Stock book sale areas
  • Assist with Computer Classes

    • Bronze – Young adults: 100-174 hours/ Adults: 100-249 hours
    • Silver – Young adults: 175-249 hours/ Adults: 250-499 hours
    • Gold – Young Adults: 250+ hours / Adults 500+ hours
  • Call to Service Award – 4,000+ hours (over a lifetime)
  • Contributing your talents and time to improving the service to your community
  • Looks great on a college application or work resume


Requirements for Volunteers
  • Must be 14 years old or older to volunteer for the Library
  • Must work well with other people
  • Must be able to perform tasks either working alone or with other staff or volunteers
  • Commitment of 3 months with a minimum of 2 hours a week
  • Attend a Volunteer orientation
  • Have a Volunteer application on file
  • Follow a weekly schedule as given by branch staff
  • Volunteers work 2 hour shifts up to twice a week and are scheduled to best meet the need of the libraries
  • Must be able to push, pull, and lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Pass a basic volunteer skill assessment
  • Must arrive on time and call ahead to notify staff if you will be late or absent
  • Adhere to the Volunteer Dress Code
  • Volunteers must dress appropriately for the conditions and performance of their duties which include but are not limited to:
  • Closed toe shoes
  • Clothes must not be too tight or revealing
  • Clothes may not be too baggy
  • Clothes must not have profanity or inappropriate graphics on them
  • Volunteers must sign and agree to comply with the County library’s volunteer expectations
  • Due to the nature of working with children, we do not accept court ordered volunteers
